Artist Julia Buckwalter invites viewers on a journey through rocky canyons and under cloud-filled skies. With her vivid large scale paintings in oil on canvas, Buckwalter follows Powell’s expedition from the Green river to the Confluence with the Colorado, climbing the mesas of Canyonlands to explore wide open horizons and timeless desert landscapes and scenes from the region. Her exhibit was on display at the museum from June 18 through December December 14, 2022.
A well-known member of the Moab artist community, Julia’s work has been on display in shops and galleries throughout town for many years. She was the 2021 Southeast Utah Group Artist in the Parks, where she spent seven months painting the clouds and landscapes in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and Natural Bridges and Hovenweep National Monuments.

“My travels in the desert have always evoked a sense of spiritual questing, a return to soul that many who live here remain spellbound by. These paintings are an expression of that longing and returning.”
